Airlink adds more Ndola flights
Starting April 11, Airlink will introduce additional morning departures to Ndola, Zambia, on Mondays and Wednesdays.
In a statement, the airline said the new flights were in addition to its current daily Ndola service, which departs at 09h45.
The additional capacity has been introduced in response to market demand from Johannesburg-based travellers who wanted to arrive earlier in Zambia, thereby extending their business day and week.
According to the airline the earlier return flights will also provide additional connections with the departures of Airlink, SAA and Star Alliance partners’ flights throughout Southern Africa and the world.
Flights will depart Johannesburg at 07h10, arriving in Ndola at 09h20, with return flights departing Ndola at 09h55, arriving in Johannesburg at 12h10.
The new flights will be operated by Airlink’s 37-seat Embraer ERJ 135 regional jets. Airlink recently increased its fleet to nine Embraer ERJ 135s and operates a combined fleet of 30 passenger and cargo aircraft.

New hope for George cableway
The future of the Garden Route Cableway - which will be the longest and highest in Africa - is looking bright once more, Die Burger reports.
The project came to a standstill two years ago when facilitator, Claude Pretorius (85) died and the foreign investors withdrew due to the global recession.
Irene Vermeulen, one of the directors of the Outeniqua cableway project said a new company, Garden Route Cableway, and its directors, Pierre Poolman and Alwyn van Rensburg, have revived the dream.
The project is in its planning stages and various route alternatives are being investigated.
The cableway is set to stretch from the foot of the Outeniqua mountain to the top of Cradock Peak. The distance is expected to be 1 573 m high, about 500 m higher than Table Mountain's cableway.
Vermeulen said that potential investors have been approached and that they are currently waiting for quotes from companies to construct stations along the route.
They are also looking at the integration of the cableway and the current railway as part of a plan to make George a more attractive tourist destination.

Airlink achieves improved schedule reliability at Mthatha
A new GNSS (Global Navigational Satellite System) approach technique was successfully implemented for Mthatha Airport (formerly Umtata) on January 12.
The prime benefit of this technique, which uses global navigational positioning satellites to accurately determine the aircraft’s position during the approach phase of a flight prior to landing at an airport, can be seen during poor weather conditions and periods of limited visibility when aircraft are descending to land at an airport. The implementation of the new approach procedure resulted from extensive work and cooperation between Airlink and the SACAA. Airlink previously made Aviation history, in South Africa, by designing and implementing the first GNSS approach for application on its Pietermaritzburg operations.
In the case of its first implementation at Pietermaritzburg airport, Airlink was able to achieve a vast improvement in schedule reliability. Diversions to the alternate airport (King Shaka in the case of Pietermaritzburg) necessitated by bad weather fell to less than 1% during the past 12 month period. In the case of Mthatha, where previously when aircraft were not able to land at the airport due to bad weather and poor visibility and had to divert to East London, the airline has already seen growing benefits in schedule reliability. To date, since the implementation of the technique in January, no flight has had to divert to East London due to bad weather in Mthatha.
‘The benefit to our passengers and their travel agents, is that they can now look forward to making bookings on our flights between Johannesburg and Mthatha with confidence’ said Karin Murray Marking and Sales Manager for Airlink. ‘This is really pleasing as we know that some passengers would previously choose to book and fly to East London and then have to endure a challenging drive of in excess of 3 hours to Mthatha. The improved reliability will allow them to now enjoy the benefit of our direct flights and save on their travel costs, in fact we have already had a number of our high profile passengers contact us to express their appreciation of the increased reliability’ added Karin.
Airlink services Mthatha daily with two flights per day Monday to Friday, with a single Saturday morning and a Sunday afternoon flight. The schedule is in line with market preference and is operated with Airlink’s Jetstream 41 turbo-prop aircraft. The Jetstreams were recently upgraded with a significant investment being made by Airlink in their avionics suite to take full advantage of the GNSS technology.

Club Med puts ‘Sizzle’ into winter travel
Club Med has introduced its new packages for the 2012/2013 European winter season.
Sales open on March 13 for travel any time between November 1 and April 2013 to any of Club Med’s 80 resorts around the globe, with a focus on value for money, says Club Med md, Stuart De Bourgogne.
“We’re particularly excited about this year’s promotion because our guests have more to choose from,” says De Bourgogne. “We opened Valmorel in France in December, we’re opening Guilin in China in August, we’ve just renovated our resort in Phuket and later this month we’ll announce a new ski resort in Italy.”
Winter sales open with the Early Booking Bonus, where travellers booking before July 25 get a discount of R3 000 per person at any sun or snow resort, with the exception of Mauritius. Each person booked to stay at either La Pointe aux Canonniers or La Plantation d’Albion will receive a R2 500 discount – this means, for example, that a family of four booking a holiday at Club Med Phuket can save R10 500 on their total package.
Guests booking on March 13-15 can do so without having to worry about any booking restrictions, which effectively means that they can plan a holiday without any limitations on resort types, dates and numbers.
Travellers booking between July 26 and November 7 receive a R2 000 discount.
Guests can use this saving to upgrade to either a suite or a deluxe room at any Club Med resort. The room upgrade is an affordable option to stay in one of Club Med’s best locations at any resort.
Furthermore, guests who wish to extend their holiday beyond day 7, qualify for a daily discount of 10% on the additional days booked. Honeymooners can also take advantage of the Early Booking Bonus with a 15% discount at any of Club Med’s 13 romantic destinations, including Bali, Mauritius, Thailand and Malaysia.
